Monitor Data Import Jobs in Model-driven Apps

The data import experience in the unified interface is a million times better than it ever used to be. I particularly love doing it via excel online - its magic! But if you forget to click on the ‘Track Progress’ button, its a bit of a faff to get back to monitor your data import jobs as you have to go via advanced settings - a place most users should never have to go.

As the interface for data imports is now available in the unified interface - why not add it to the sitemap of your app?

Create a pretty icon (optional but important!)

When adding URL subareas to sitemaps they display a generic default icon which is rather generic so

  1. Head to Flat Icon and download the icon of your dreams (its free to download PNG)

  2. Convert it to an SVG using Online SVG image converter

  3. Create a web resource for the icon

Or if you are really lazy, here’s the SVG for my import icon ready for you to download and add to your web resource -> Import Icon (thank me later 😉)

Add a ‘URL’ subarea to your sitemap

  1. Add a sub area to your sitemap

  2. Select type URL

  3. Use the snippet below

  4. Replace the default icon with your pretty data import icon you just created

P.S don’t forget to update the Title too

/main.aspx?pagetype=entitylist&etn=importfile

Excel online in action

Because the docs link really doesn’t do it justice of the wow factor it offers!
